The Belbin model is used in over 40% of the top 100 companies in the UK, the United Nations, the World Bank, and many other organizations worldwide. Belbin's research identified nine separate clusters of behavior, which he called 'roles.' After numerous iterations, he found that the best-performing teams have a balanced range of behaviors, roles, and approaches to problem-solving among their members. In his experiments, Belbin divided teams based on intellectual capacity and work ethic, but surprisingly, highly intellectual teams did not always outperform lower-intellect ones.

Meredith Belbin, a British researcher and management theorist, attempted to answer the question of why even highly skilled teams fail to perform well at Henley Management College in the 1970s.
